1982 (News and Memories from Bill Truman, Class of 1982):

  • Head Coach was Don Miller, Bucky Trotter was our assistant.
  • Teammates from that year:  Scott Cochran (catcher), Jeff Lunsford (1st base – all conference), Joey McElhanney (2nd base), Jesse Jordan (shortstop), Gary Noel (centerfield), Matt Center (leftfield), Jody Taylor ?(right field), Mike Wilder (Pitcher – all conference and MVP of conference), Jerry Cobb (Pitcher), Doug Fowler (outfield),John Yenco (outfield), John LaFrancis (outfield), Verian Blakely (sp?), Carl Delaney (shortstop)  - believe that’s most of them – hard to believe I remember those names!!
  • I (Bill Truman) played Third Base on the team and lettered 3 years.
  • We were the first winning varsity team my senior year winning the Peach Blossom Conference 3A (1982).  Hosted a double elimination first round which we lost to Newberry and Strom Thurmond and beat Clinton.  I believe Strom Thurmond went on to win class 3A that year.
  • Hillcrest was always a rival but not in our conference (they were 4A).  Our biggest in conference rival that year was Riverside High School (which ironically Coach Miller went on to coach years later).  We beat them at McClain field with Matthew Center forcing a balk from the Pitcher as he broke from third to home during the Pitcher’s windup.  It set the tone for our season as we went on to win the conference title.
